Are you in favor of a luxury tax on motorcycles and atv’s?

By ATV Rider
Tom B asked:

people that buy and own motorcycles and atv’s have money, and a motorcycle and atv is concidered a luxury, an item people don’t need. There is a luxury tax on boats of a certain size, and cigarettets are taxed cause they are considered harmful to your health, and maybe in the same way motorcycles and atv’s are harmful to your health. We must raise taxes some way.

why should i pay extra tax on my motorcycle? i have as much right to use the road as anyone else, and i dont cause congestion by sitting in jams, blocking junctions ect. have you considered that motorcycles are no more a luxury than a car, they are just a mode of transport?? i also have a car for ferrying my kids about, every journey takes longer, uses more fuel and is less energy efficient, therefore being worse for the enviroment. i am taxed on everything, please dont encourage tax on my energy efficient machine.

WHY? What’s next luxury taxes on dining out, ipods, cell phones, home computers, gas for other than work, hunting supplies? As you can see that line of thinking just won’t fly!

Let me guess, you’re a democrat, right? Why don’t we tax stupid ideas? We could pay off the national debt with you alone.

Why must we raise taxes? How about lowering spending?
I ride my motorcycle to work, it is not a weekend toy.

No thanks. I pay enough taxes.
I hope you never become an elected official with you wanting to raise taxes and pass helmet laws and the like.

    you’re a dink.

typical politician attitude, we need money, lets raise taxes…

better yet, lets raise taxes on an industry that does not have a powerful lobby.

how about the government doing something responsible and running the country like a business.

Its amazing..people like you always want to take money out of my pocket. Here’s something for you to think about.

Ive heard people like you demonize the oil companies for making a profit. Lets see, when it comes down to it what is their profit on a gal of gas? Its about 8 cents. These companies have EMPLOYEES that require salaries ,and I’m sure some kind of benefit package that requires funding. They pay for exploration of new resources, pay dividends to stock holders. I’m sure they also have a few taxes to pay also…etc etc etc.

On the other hand, who may I ask makes money off the oil companies and doesn’t pay a dime for any of the for mentioned expenses????? Answer the GOVERNMENT!!! So you cry baby libs want to see lower gas prices? How about getting the government to CUT taxes on gasoline at all levels…..Fed,State and local. Yes the oil companies have made Billions, so what!!! Ask yourselves what the government made off the oil companies ,and then ask yourselves why they need to raise my income taxes. I dare you to ask your Senators or Congressman for this amount …….see what they say. More taxes HELL NO!!!!!!!

No way. Many atv’s are work vehicles, used on farms and ranches. Others are used by state and local governments for search and rescue purposes. Some people who use them for hunting or just for getting out in the woods are physically disabled and could not do these activities at all without their atv’s. As for motorcycles, they consume less than half as much fuel as a typical car on the road, and they also take up about half as much space. I have seen as many as 4 motorcycles in a single parking space at my local college, where parking is scarce. If anything there should be a tax break for riding motorcycles.

Yes, great idea. We can always walk, anyway. Who need a motorcycle? Luxury tax on motorcycle is definitely necessary.

Choosing a motorcycle over a car for commuting makes sense. I get 50MPG from my Roadstar. My car is 22MPG. I should think that we actually get some sort of incentive for considering the enviornment and conserving gas.

Luxury tax? Have you ever ridden a motorcycle when it’s under 40 degrees? No luxury there my friend..

Would be a much better idea to have a luxury tax on non-commercial use SUV’s, Hummers and the like. If you NEED a 7 liter engine to tow stuff around get a tax break but if you have a small d*** and need a symbol you should be taxed for the inefficiency and traffic problems you cause.
Motorcycles should get a tax break to promote use.
Not everyone is in USA and only uses them as toys.
Tax gas at 60%, the people who waste most will then pay most

I’m assuming you’re playing devils advocate. If not, you’re an idiot… straight up.

I’ve counted on a motorcycle for my only source of transportation for years. Fortunately, I no longer need to do so… although I still prefer a bike over a cage anyday.

I’m not alone in this. I know PLENTY of people that only own a motorcycle. And plenty more that commute via their motorcycle and leave their cage at home… reducing emmissions, reducing traffic, etc, etc.

Not too many people take personal watercraft to work every day. And cigarettes… a little bit of a stretch, don’t ya think? How about taxing you for not installing a non-slick mat in your bathtub. Wet porceline is, indeed, hazardous to your health.

Personally – I think the idea of a luxury tax, regardless of what you’re applying it to – is a crime. Why should anyone, regardless of income – have to pay extra taxes – on top of what they already pay in sales and income tax – just because they used the fruits of their labor to buy something they enjoy? Luxury taxes are socialism, plain simple. And the last time I checked, the United States was based on Capitalism.

    You’re a blithering idiot.

People that own motorcycles and atv’s have money? I bought my first motorcycle because I couldn’t afford to put gas in my truck for my long commute. And most of the atv’s around here are owned by farmers who use them for rounding up livestock or spreading fertilizer.

Why should there be a luxury tax on these methods of conveyance, as opposed to actual luxury vehicles, like Lamborghinis or Porsches? I already pay personal property tax on my motorcycle, and now you want more of my hard-earned money?

And how are motorcycles harmful to my health? The most harmful thing to my health is the way my blood pressure goes up when blabbering liberals go spouting nonsense.

If you’re that concerned, why don’t you just donate all your spare money to the IRS.

yes tax helmets, they are not necessary for the operation of the vehicle therefore are an unneccesary luxury.

Don’t you think we pay enough taxes? What kind of idiot are you? Hell no we shouldn’t pay taxes on motorcycles. To me they are a luxury, but some people use them for their only means of transportation. If you are so thrilled about giving your money to the government you should just donate it to your local dogcatcher.

  20. Firecracker says:

    Blow it, Tom.
People with motorcycles don’t necessarily have money.
Each and every one that I bought for myself cost $600 or less.
I rode them because they were a heck of a lot cheaper than running my old F-150 at 10 mpg.

Yes, I ride a Harley now, but that’s because my kid told his mother she had to buy one with the insurance if he didn’t come home from Iraq. He came home, in 3 separate shipments.

    Luxury? I think not.

I smoke too. Did anyone ever notice that while the politicians are trying to get rid of smoking through various legislation, that at the same time they are depending on us ADDICTS for their funding??? Raise the tobacco tax to pay for schools?
What happens when they get their wish? No smoking=no money.

  21. brewnbiker says:

    Jafrum Leather

Nope. My first bike was bought in college to get around because I could not afford anything else. It definitely was not a ‘luxury’ but a necessity.

You’re kidding, right? Most motorcycles aren’t toys, they are only forms of transportation for most people. If you want a tax for a motorcycle, consider the motorcycle license the tax part.
